The system commonly used in the United States and Great Britain is the one proposed by F. M. Whyte. With this system, numerals are used to represent the number of wheels in each group starting at the front end, the first denoting the number of wheels in the leading truck, the second the number of drivers and the third the number of wheels in the trailing truck. In articulated locomotives a numeral is used for each group of drivers. The diagrams and tables below show the application of the system to most types of locomotives.
